How To Estimate Jobs For Contractors | Estimating 101

What you'll get

A Southern California contractor who sells coaching and a course to new contractors lists what a bid should cover: whether you have capacity for the job, weather and schedule, permits and licenses, a drawn layout of the work, direct costs such as materials and labor, indirect costs such as insurance and travel, and a profit line. He gives profit percentages without saying whether they are a share of the price or of your cost, so watch it after the markup lesson and work out the base before you copy any of them.

Do this week

Build a one-page estimate sheet with lines for materials, labor, subcontractors, permits and licenses, travel, insurance, a weather or delay allowance and profit, and use it on your next bid.
