For plumbing, heating and fire sprinklers: the state board's applicant page says a plumbing or heating contractor exam needs 2 years (4,000 hours) of on-site experience, up to half of it schooling, and that the board has no reciprocity agreements with other states, with a South Carolina exam waiver and a neighbor-state recognition act as its exceptions. It puts review at about six weeks and offers exams at seven test centers, including Asheville, so build that wait into your launch date; fire sprinkler requirements differ, and the page lists no fees, so ask the board.
Do this week
Add up your on-site hours in the trade, get written confirmation from past employers, and compare the total with the 4,000 hours the page asks for before a contractor exam.
