Building, Remodeling, Improving Your Home
This lesson is a guide published by NCLBGC.
Read the guideWhat you'll get
The general contractors board's advice to homeowners shows what your clients are told to expect from you: several written estimates that list materials and a payment timetable, references, a detailed written contract with changes noted in writing, a small down payment, payments that follow completed work, no cash payments, and a final payment only when the work is done and liens have been released. Read it as your customer would, then build your own estimate and contract template to meet each point.
Do this week
Check your estimate and contract template against each tip on the page and add whatever is missing, such as a payment schedule tied to finished work and a written change-order line.
