What you'll get

For general contracting and remodeling: the board's applicant page says a company must name a qualifier who has passed a board-approved exam, and its classifications page sorts licenses by type and into limited, intermediate and unlimited tiers that cap a single project at $750,000, $1.5 million or no cap. The board's home page says a general contractor must be licensed when a project is valued at $40,000 or more, and G.S. 87-1 agrees, so confirm which license your next bid needs.

Do this week

Write down the largest single job you expect to bid in the next year, find the tier that covers it on the classifications page, and email the board to confirm you have read the rules correctly.
