What you'll get

For electrical work: the electrical board's licensing page says you pass its exam, then apply for a license that is limited to a single project up to $60,000, intermediate up to $150,000 or unlimited, or for one of seven special restricted classes for narrower work. Its fees page lists a $125 application and exam fee and yearly license fees of $100, $150 and $200, so you can price the path before you leave a job; confirm current amounts with the board.

Do this week

Pick the license level that fits the largest single job you expect in your first year, then add up its exam fee and first-year license fee and note whether the page says that level needs a bonding-ability statement.
