What you'll get

Mike Pfotenhauer describes starting in the 1970s with a small Santa Cruz shop that sewed backpacks to fit hikers better, getting known with nothing but a sign out front, and then moving production twice, first to a small Colorado town and then to a large Southeast Asian city, where he moved his family to stay close to the design work. It took more than twenty-five years to become a global brand, which makes it the closest match here for WNC's sewn-gear makers.

Do this week

Spend a day at the shop or factory that makes your product this month and write down three problems that only show up when you watch the work in person.
