What you'll get

The FTC's staff guide to U.S. origin claims says a plain Made in USA claim means the product is all or virtually all made here, with final assembly and all significant processing in the U.S. and no more than negligible foreign content, and that since the 2021 labeling rule an unqualified label that fails the test can bring civil penalties. It also covers qualified claims such as Assembled in USA, with examples such as imported watch movements that make a plain claim deceptive even though they are a small share of the cost, so read it before you print a label or write website copy.

Do this week

List each component and process in one product with where it comes from and its share of manufacturing cost, and decide from the guide's examples whether you can say Made in USA, Assembled in USA or neither.
