Design for Manufacturing Course 11 Part 1: Design for Manual Assembly
Video from Dragon Innovation. Watch on YouTube.
What you'll get
Scott Miller's 2014 lecture on designing a product so people can put it together quickly: why fewer parts means fewer fixtures and less time at the bench, and ways to join plastic parts, including ultrasonic welding, glue and screws, and spring clips, with examples from a classic design-for-assembly textbook. His firm mostly handled injection-molded plastic and sold manufacturing services, so use the lecture for how to think about part count and joining, and check each technique against your own materials.
Do this week
Count the parts in your current prototype, circle any that could merge with a neighbor or be left out, and time how long one person takes to assemble a unit from loose parts.
