Marking of Country of Origin on U.S. Imports
This lesson is a guide published by CBP.
Read the guideWhat you'll get
CBP's guide says every foreign-made article entering the United States must be legibly marked in English with its country of origin unless an exception applies, and covers what counts as the origin when a second country does more work, how conspicuous and permanent the mark must be, which forms of marking CBP prefers and which articles are excepted. It is the counterpart to the FTC's Made in USA guide for anyone who imports parts or finished goods, and its warning that adhesive labels can come loose and leave the importer paying to remark the goods is worth reading before you order marked product.
Do this week
For each part or product you import, write down its country of origin and how it will be marked permanently on the item, and check the page's list of articles not requiring marking before you assume an exception.
