Food Labeling & Allergens
This lesson is a guide published by NC State Extension.
Read the guideWhat you'll get
NC State Extension's page on what a packaged-food label must carry: the product name, net quantity in US and metric units, the maker's name and address, ingredients by weight, and the nine major allergens with the two ways to list them, plus a note that small businesses can skip the Nutrition Facts panel. Food makers can build a first label from it; body-care makers should go to FDA's cosmetics labeling summary in this module's deeper lessons, and anyone relying on the small-business exemption should check FDA's own page for the exact tests.
Do this week
Lay out your label's front and information panels on paper using the page's required items, then write your ingredient list in weight order and circle every ingredient that is one of the nine allergens.
