What you'll get

The Consumer Product Safety Commission's page says traditional soap made mainly from fats and an alkali is its territory, with no soap-specific rules beyond general hazardous-substance labeling and, for soap meant mainly for children 12 and under, a tracking label, third-party lead testing and a Children's Product Certificate. It warns that moisturizing or scent claims, or ingredients known for cosmetic properties, can move a product to FDA as a cosmetic, so read FDA's cosmetic-or-drug page to see which side your bar falls on.

Do this week

Check your soap against the page's three tests, what it is made of, what does the cleaning and what your label and website claim for it, and write down whether it passes as true soap.
